The main theme of her current work is an exploration in transparent watercolor of sunlight and shadow and the rhythm that evolves from the abstract design they create. Her paintings can be found in many collections throughout the United States, Europe and Asia. Originally from Arlington, Virginia, Helen Burkett moved to Sarasota, Florida in 1974, where she maintains her studio. DESIGN - Environments for Aging is the 14th edition in a series of senior care design competitions cosponsored by Long-Term Living magazine, the Society for the Advancement of Gerontological Environments and The Center for Health Design. The rennovation and expansion of Pines Village is one of only two independent living communities featured and was included in the Honorable Mentions and Obstacles & Solutions Sections. The publication showcases the latest concepts in elder-friendly design and they tell how designers, facility owners and government regulators collaborated to realize them. The idea behind the DESIGN/EFA competition is not simply to showcase the elite; it is to open up the work of senior care design for all to see, evaluate and learn from.
