Pines Village Retirement Communities, Inc., announces the 2022-2023 recipients of the Margaret M. Rivers and Anne Lauterbach scholarship awards. The scholarship program was created to foster employee longevity and encourage employees to pursue their higher education goals. Through the generosity of our residents, their families, the Board of Directors, and staff, over $315,000 in scholarships has been awarded to Pines Village employees since 1996.
The Margaret M. Rivers Fund - created in honor of Midge Rivers, founding director and CEO of Pines Village Retirement Communities.
The Anne Lauterbach Fund - created in honor of the late Anne Lauterbach, an educator, and a Pines Village resident.
Every year Pines Village holds a ceremony for graduates and scholarship recipients for residents, staff, and their families to celebrate their achievements.
This year, for the 2022-2023 school year, a little over $ 26,000 was awarded to the following 12 student employees:
Vivian Ballesteros received a combined Anne Lauterbach and Margaret M Rivers scholarship. Vivian has been employed in Home Health for almost three years and attends Ivy Tech Community College in Valparaiso working towards her Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Vivian’s parents are Catherine Kasl and Alfredo Ballesteros.
Iyanla Edwards received a Margaret M. Rivers scholarship. Iyanla has been employed in Home Health for over three years and attends Indiana University Northwest, where she majors in Radiologic Sciences. Iyanla’s parents are Crystal McCafferty and Jeremell Allen.
Madison Elizondo received an Anne Lauterbach scholarship. Madison has been employed in Home Health for a little over one year now and is attending Purdue University Northwest working towards a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (RN degree). Madison’s parents are Jennifer and Tony Elizondo.
Madelyn Evans received an Anne Lauterbach scholarship. Madelyn has been employed in Dining Services for just under 4 years and attends Grand Valley State University, where she majors in Secondary Mathematics Education. Madelyn's parents are Brad and Stanna Evans.
Lilly Gillins received an Anne Lauterbach scholarship. Lilly has been employed in Dining Services for over five years and has also been a great help in our Resident Services department this summer! Lilly attends Florida College where she majors in Business Administration. Lily's parents are Kurt and Patty Black-Gillins.
Sydney Gowen received an Anne Lauterbach scholarship. Sydney has been employed in Dining Services for a little over three years now and will be attending Ferris State University in Big Rapids, MI where she will be majoring in Psychology with a minor in Criminal Justice. Sydney’s parents are Alecia and Ernie Gowen.
Ashley Graegin received an Anne Lauterbach scholarship. Ashley has been employed in Dining Services for almost four and a half years and attends Colgate University, where she majors in English & Education. Her parents are Geoff and Julie Graegin.
Mary Johnson received an Anne Lauterbach scholarship. Mary has been employed in Dining Services for over five years. She attends Ball State University where she double majors in Secondary Education and History and is no doubt looking forward to this December and graduation. Mary's parents are Carla and Jack Johnson.
Ankurpreet Kaur received an Anne Lauterbach scholarship. Ankur has been employed in Home Health for over three years and attends Purdue University Northwest, where she majors in Biology with a concentration in Health Sciences. Ankur’s parents are Sonia Kaur and Raj Singh.
Haley Kennedy-Mathews received an Anne Lauterbach scholarship. Haley has been employed in Home Health for nearly three years and attends Purdue University Northwest, where she majors in Nursing. Haley's parents are Jackie and David Mathews.
Kelly Lyp received an Anne Lauterbach scholarship. Kelly has been employed in Home Health as a Registered Nurse for almost a year now after being gone for a short time. We are thrilled to have her back with us as Kelly had previously worked at Pines Village for almost 5 years through high school and college starting in Dining Services and then Home Health. Kelly is now attending Saint Mary’s College at Notre Dame and is pursuing her Masters as she works towards becoming an Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner. Kelly’s parents are Jody and Patrick Lyp.
Ian Hunter Smith received an Anne Lauterbach scholarship. Ian has been employed in Dining Services for close to 2 years now and will be attending Depauw University in Greencastle, IN majoring in Philosophy as he studies to become an attorney. Ian’s parents are Hope and Julien Smith.
Pines Village would like to also congratulate 2022 college graduate Alissa Van Zuidam along with 2022 high school graduates Sydney Gowen, Kolbey Johnson, Ian Smith and Kylie Wertz. We are truly happy for each of you and your accomplishments! Congrats!!
